Yuuto and the male students moved to the next floor, and Nakayama followed after finishing the conversation with Miyashita.

While talking to Miyashita, who was changing places with Shizuku, I looked up at Kirasaka, who was still looking up at the huge water tank at the end.

She raised her white, slender hand toward the water tank and looked up with meaningful eyes.

“What’s wrong…”

I stopped walking and asked her as I turned around.

Kirasaka lowered her hand in response to my voice and smiled while putting her hands behind her back.

“No, I just thought it was similar.”

“Similar, where?”

Is it a riddle or something?

If you say that humans and fish are similar, it’ll endanger my life.

I feel like there is no common ground, but Kirasaka talked as if she was inflicting self-harm.

“I wonder if it’s being kept inside a cage called an aquarium …just like an ornament.”

“…”

Then, what she wants to say is that she is also treated carefully for people to watch like fish in an aquarium.

Inside the cage of the classroom, she was being treated like something that people couldn’t come close to.

“If it’s a self-deprecating joke, keep it moderation…”

“Is that an advice? Or are you worried?”

At that, Kirasaka retorted.

She had her usual evil smile on, but it looked like she was searching for something.

Should I say that she is pretending to be usual?

Kirasaka quietly laughed at me who choked on words.

“I’m just kidding.” With that, she walked up next to me and changed the direction of the conversation.

“To tell you the truth, I don’t like when Shinra-kun thinks about other people while traveling.”

“You really mean it…”

I also smiled wryly at Kirasaka, who said so easily without even trying to sugarcoat it even once.

Certainly, I am aware that I am doing meaningless things on my trip because of my meddling.

So, there is no room to say anything when she says it directly in words.

“Even if it’s a group action at school, how fun would it be to be by your side and talk to the usual relaxed you.”

The eyes that stood next to me and looked up were so clear that they couldn’t be seen as jokes.

I felt that she was just saying what she thought in her heart.

“I’m sure, she thinks the same…”

She spoke as she looked ahead, where Shizuku stood.

Looking at Miyashita’s back, who is talking to someone, a small sense of guilt swirls in my chest.

Feeling guilty is the sign that I also feel inferior to her.

I prioritize the request of a female student who I don’t know over the school trip that she were looking forward to.

From the perspective of someone who has been looking forward to doing things together for a long time, it is inevitable to feel angry.

“But―――”

“Even so… there is a part of me that wants you to finish what you want to do now.”

But, I have something I want to do, something I want to settle.

What Kirasaka spoke overwrote what I was about to speak.

As if she knew what words to answer with.

Unlike the sharp gaze she usually gives male students, her eyes are gentle and warm.

The same eyes as Kaede and Shizuku, who understood me.

However, those eyes soon disappeared as she lowered her eyelids.

The next words that came flying were her usual mischievous voice.

“But be prepared after the school trip is over.”

“…”

Watching her back as she grabs me and pulls me along with an impudent smile, I think she’s still someone who I don’t know what she’s thinking.

While having such a conversation, Miyashita and Shizuku were having a dialogue face to face.

“Kanazaki-san isn’t dating Ogiwara-kun, is she?”

“No, no, it’s a completely unfounded rumour.”

Shizuku waved her hand and asserted that it’s different, causing Miyashita to breathe out.

She seemed relieved, bit she still had doubts.

“Then, is it okay if Ogiwara-kun ends up dating another girl?”

“You don’t need my permission… and sometimes extra consideration only gets in the way.”

With these few words, Shizuku cut off the conversation and smiled broadly.

It was a statement that was so strong that it was hard to imagine coming from her usual gentle and ladylike nature.

It was also a moment when classmates realized that Shizuku Kanazaki, whom she had seen, was really only a very small part of who she was.

On the second day, the final destination is Okinawa’s famous tourist spot, the Churaumi Aquarium.

In summary, when organizing the information, it was previously popular for its swimming whale sharks in the world’s largest aquarium called “Kuroshio no Umi,” and the name of the aquarium seems to mean something like “clear sea” in the Okinawan dialect.

“Wow…”

At the rear of the group walking with the team leader Nakayama, I exclaim in astonishment, looking up information on my smartphone as if talking to myself.

Certainly, at the back of the aquarium, the sea stretches out in front of you, and a clear sea extends.

I couldn’t understand the meaning in the dialect, so I’ve learned a little piece of trivia.

I have to brag about this when I get back to Kaede.

I turn off the smartphone screen and put it in my uniform pants, then I walk up to Shizuku and Kirasaka, who are proceeding with the entrance procedures.

“The upper level is the entrance, and the lower level is the exit. It’s an interesting design, isn’t it?”

“Since the sea is behind us… Certainly, it’s easier to make it from top to bottom.”

I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels a little scared by that structure, in contrast to Shizuku, who tells me excitedly with shining eyes.

It’s okay, even if a large number of people enter in there at the same time, they won’t fall into the sea, will they?

The students around me probably don’t think about such worries at all.

Like our group, many students have the aquarium as their final destination, and the same uniform could be seen moving around in various places in my field of vision.

The direction is towards the entrance, which is also the signboard of the aquarium, a large gate with glass, which welcomes students, and a large monument of a whale shark, a signboard of the aquarium, greets the students.

“Kainmon…?”

<海人門, that’s the kanji here.>

I wonder why I feel déjà vu when I see the characters written in three kanji characters.

Could it be… something like the Gate of Babylon?

Incorporating elements of eighth-grade syndrome.

As I tilt my head, Kirasaka, who passed by me, casually provided an answer.

“It’s Uminchu, it’s written as ‘people of the sea’ in three characters, U-Mi-N-Chu. It’s a word that means fishermen in the Okinawan language.”

“Oh, I see.”

Thank you, Kirasaka-the-dictionary.

It seems that the word already existed in her dictionary.

She does have a villa in Okinawa, after all.

“However, Uminchu… Well, it does seem like ‘Gate’ fits better in terms of pronunciation…”

<Wordplay: = Gate, so he’s saying here that shouldn’t the English (Katakana) ‘gate’ would be better here for that feeling of ‘Gate of Babylon’ stfu. That’s what I understood, don’t ask me, I don’t know Japanese.>

“Gate, huh… Gate.”

“What’s wrong?”

Standing in front of the Uminchu Gate, I was pondering, and Shizuku asked me.

Could it be that once you pass through this gate, you become a fisherman too? Is there some kind of fantasy world setup here?

Shizuku, with a hint of amusement, pulled me forward as I hesitated.

“Everyone’s moving ahead, Minato-kun. Come on!”

“Uh, being a fisherman might be a bit too much for me…”

“What are you saying? Such a challenging occupation is beyond you, Minato-kun.”

“…”

Unexpectedly, I felt a sharp stab in my chest from Shizuku’s words.

Yuuto and Miyashita were walking ahead and they had apparently heard Shizuku’s voice. Both of them seemed to be suppressing their laughter.

Kirasaka, on the other hand, just gave me a sidelong glance and didn’t say anything. Well, it’s not like I can’t respond to her.

Regardless of my inner turmoil, I advanced through the Uminchu Gate and descended the escalator to the entrance.

As our group clustered to await our turn for the entrance procedures, I looked at Miyashita.

I noticed her gaze had shifted from Yuuto to me, and she was sending me a meaningful look.

Once we were a few steps away from Shizuku and the others, I faced Miyashita.

“What happened?”

Miyashita spoke immediately.

We were about to start the main event of our free time, and she was probably eager to get it over with, as an atmosphere of wanting a brief conversation could be felt.

“I wanted to ask… since the aquarium’s interior probably has dim lighting and it’ll be crowded, is it okay if we use a method to split up the group?”

“That’s fine. Thank you.”

Miyashita nodded in agreement, looking a bit apologetic.

“Sorry. I know you probably want to enjoy yourself, too, Shinra.”

Saying that, she glanced at Shizuku, Kirasaka, and finally, Yuuto.

Just like her, they were looking forward to the school trip, and they intended to enjoy it. This was a once-in-a-lifetime trip for us.

She must have felt guilty about inconveniencing us with her personal situation.

“In that case, could you tell them instead of me?”

She’d be better at explaining it to them. After all, the three of them were more excited about this school trip than anyone else.

And they were probably looking forward to the rest of the day as well, including today.

As long as our interests aligned on that, it was enough.

However, that was something Miyashita couldn’t possibly understand, and explaining our circumstances and feelings in detail would be a hassle.

So, after a vague response, I blurted out the one thing I wanted to ask.

“Are you planning to talk to Nakayama at some point?”

“…”

There’s a brief silence in response to the question. Their relationship is somewhat unclear, even though they may be considered friends.

She can’t just say goodbye and be over with it.

Although it may be an exaggeration to say goodbye, but Nakayama will continue to be around Yuuto, as long as she doesn’t express her determination like she did to me.

Until Yuuto is able to draw a firm line in their relationship.

“Yeah… that’s right.”

She says in a small, hesitant voice as she looks down.

In such situations, it’s often the boys who maintain a straightforward demeanor, while girls tend to hold on to grudges when group relationships become strained.

It’s a spark that flew close to me, and I don’t want to get caught up in it even after the school trip.

She waits quietly to see how Miyashita responds.

She raises her face with a determined expression.

“Should I go to the aquarium together, Tsumugi? And I’d like to talk to Kanzaki-san as well.”

<Apparantly, it’s Nakayama Tsumugi>

“Well, you can do as you like, Miyashita, but we don’t have time for two rounds inside the aquarium.”

Checking my smartphone screen, I noticed that it’s 3 PM. Since we’re staying in different accommodations on the first and second days, we have limited time, with a maximum limit of 4:30 PM.

Given the group’s schedule, there isn’t enough time for two rounds inside the aquarium. If Miyashita wants to talk to both Nakayama and Shizuku, it would be better to prioritize Yuuto’s time for her.

However, she understands that this is her request despite the constraints.

She smiles and nods in response to my words, not pushing the matter further.

Churaumi Aquarium’s route begins on the fourth floor before the entrance, and you exit on the first floor.

<i.e. Ground floor for us.>

Each floor has its own theme, with the fourth floor inviting you to the open sea, the third floor taking you on a journey to the coral reef, part of the second and first floors leading to the Kuroshio Current, and the first floor marking the voyage to the deep sea.

The basic concept is a ‘journey.’

Since I’m not particularly knowledgeable about deep-sea fish and all that, I’d like to see penguins or seals. Dolphins are cool too.

On the fourth floor, you can look at the coral reef tanks from above. As you enter the facility, the first thing you see is a shallow aquarium.

Inside, there are starfish, sea cucumbers, and other creatures you can touch.

“Look, it’s a starfish.”

“Seriously, it’s a starfish.”

Next to us, the baseball team boys and some elementary school kids were crouching down, happily dipping their hands into the tank, exclaiming things without much substance.

Further ahead, you’ll find the coral reef you observed from the fourth-floor area, along with tropical fish. As you progress, the lighting becomes more stylish and dimmer.

The tanks housing water-dwelling creatures have round windows that are designed like windows for viewing.

“What’s that over there, an eel?”

“It’s big…”

Looking into one window, both Shizuku and I peered in to see a massive eel swimming serenely with the school.

I couldn’t help but think, is a big eel delicious? I guess aquarium dates are not my thing.

As I was getting closer to Shizuku to the point where our hair touched, a white hand slipped in and gently pushed her head to the left.

In her place, Kirasaka moved over and began explaining.

“They’re called giant oarfish. It’s not that eels have gotten bigger, they’re a different species altogether.”

“Eh, maybe Fish-kun…?”

“Shall I ensure that mouth of yours never opens again?”

Kirasaka replied with a smile, her expression poised. Her eyes were intense, and her voice carried an intimidating tone.

“Minato! Let’s move on.”

A little further ahead, Yuuto called out to us, waiting with other team members.

His timing for calling us was perfect; he might be able to become my best friend.

Silently praising Yuuto in my mind, I smoothly continued to the next section, passing between Kirasaka and Shizuku.

The aquarium featured areas such as theaters and shark exhibits, all about creatures I would never have shown interest in. Their existence was entirely new to me, and I found myself reading the informational plaques.

Finally, we reached the main attraction, the enormous tank called the “Kuroshio Sea” on the second floor.

Up until now, people would occasionally pause and look at various species in the tanks. But here, a massive crowd had gathered to observe the whale sharks swimming in the tank. Many were taking photos with their smartphones and cameras, and a few girls even posed for selfies in the dimly lit room.

This was the perfect place to discreetly separate from the team members.

“When I come to an aquarium, I don’t want to eat seafood for a while.”

It was completely off-topic, but I needed to say something to shift the focus to me, so I commented to Yuuto and the baseball team duo behind him.

“Yeah, I’m looking forward to tonight’s cottage barbecue.”

“You’re really into meat, aren’t you?”

Yuuto smiled with empathy, nodding, and another male student made a somewhat bewildering remark.

At that moment, Miyashita approached Nakayama.

“Tsumugi, could you come with me for a moment?”

“What? What’s this all of a sudden?”

Suddenly, Miyashita took Tsumugi’s hand, and the two of them easily moved to the opposite side of the floor from where the rest of us were standing.

The guys in our group didn’t notice, their attention focused upwards. Even I, who knew they would be separating, quickly lost sight of them in the crowd.

This should be okay.

After taking a deep breath, I approached Shizuku, who was also watching the whale sharks on the right side, and quietly conveyed my request.

“It seems Miyashita has something to discuss. She’ll probably be on the opposite side of this floor. If you find her, please give her a call.”

“To me?”

Surprised by the unexpected request, Shizuku opened her eyes wide but nodded obediently.

Making the most of our remaining time at the Kuroshio Sea floor, our group reluctantly moved on to the next part of our journey.

A fun school trip is something that can be described as ‘fun for everyone’ when everyone shares similar values, isn’t it?

If that’s the case, the actions I’m taking are far from the principle of having fun.

I had been interfering with their conversations, deliberately preventing Nakayama from getting closer to Yuuto.

After leaving the Peace Memorial Park, the whole group changed course towards a commercial facility that also served as a lunch and souvenir exhibition area. On the second floor of the building, we treated ourselves to taco rice.

By the way, there’s no octopus in taco rice.

While resolving this simple question, I ate the slightly spicy meal as much as I could, using small bites.

In the integrated merchandise store, students who had finished eating were descending one by one to pick souvenirs for their families.

If I were to go quickly, I would end up in a crowded place.

That was something I wasn’t fond of.

It was stuffy, and since I was in the same group as Yuuto, I was afraid of the girls’ gazes.

Additionally, the gazes from the boys were cold, perhaps because Shizuku and Kirasaka were also in the same group.

In any case, as long as the group members who attract people’s attention are together, it’s impossible to avoid the surrounding gazes.

So, I wanted to avoid at least the times when it was densely crowded.

Probably, the other three had similar thoughts.

However, there were different students as well.

“Ogiwara-kun, why don’t we go down and take a look?”

“It’s quite crowded right now, maybe it’s better to go a little later, isn’t it?”

If you had to name someone, it was obvious who it was. Nakayama leaned forward to Yuuto and made a suggestion.

With this group’s composition, the expected development was clear.

“If Ogiwara-kun is going, then maybe I’ll go with you.”

“Even Miyashita-san…”

Miyashita sat down next to Yuuto, quietly raising her hand in agreement.

…Well, she didn’t promise to follow all my instructions, so I couldn’t really complain about her actions.

To be honest, if there were a little less crowd, I would have used my intrusion tactic to make a bit more space and create moments of privacy with Yuuto.

But Yuuto looked troubled and turned his gaze towards me.

I mean, I didn’t want him to delegate this decision to me.

However, the two girls on either side of Yuuto were already in combat mode. Their gazes mixed, and their minds were solely focused on who would get to spend time with Yuuto at the souvenir corner.

I involuntarily let out a deep sigh and looked down. Shaking my head, I gestured, ‘Please, go ahead.’

As if they were waiting for this, Miyashita and Nakayama each grabbed one of Yuuto’s arms and started walking towards the stairs.

As Nakayama, who had hold of Yuuto’s arm, turned around, she made a childish provocation, to which I couldn’t help but chuckle.

It seemed her collection for riling up others was rather limited.

“The main event is the free time after this, so let’s take a little break too.”

“Right…”

Shizuku, who was re-brewing the tea next to her, told in a small, gentle voice.

Kirasaka on the other side also had a map of Kokusai Street, which we would visit later, open on her table.

What are we doing on this school trip?

We’ve deviated so much from the original plan, and we’re entangled in various situations.

School trips are considered the grandest stage for romance, and most students would probably agree.

So, from a student event perspective, our actions weren’t necessarily wrong.

But in the back of my mind, I couldn’t help but think that these two girls, who were cooperating with me, had no real benefits.

Knowing this, I couldn’t help but feel sorry.

“I’m sorry… for dragging you two along.”

“What is this about? I didn’t expect the school trip to be much different.”

“I’m also happy as long as I can enjoy the sightseeing with the same group.”

Kirasaka brushed off my comment as she usually did when she heard me talking about our current situation.

Shizuku, on the other hand, just smiled gently.

Strangely enough, these girls in front of me now seemed incredibly kind and almost motherly in a way.

It’s not something you’d expect when you usually see them bickering and arguing with other students.

This is what it must mean to grow up… I thought to myself in a sort of vague, unclear inner monologue and added a hint of humour to it.

With a heavy sigh, I slowly got up.

“I’m going to get a souvenir for Kaede. Will both of you help me choose?”

In response to my request, both of them nodded in agreement.

The morning visit to the Peace Memorial Park and the lunch break with souvenir shopping had concluded, leading us to the long-awaited free time.

For most students, this was the highlight of the trip, where they could explore Okinawa without any specific plans.

Our group was no exception, most of us had been eagerly anticipating this moment.

“Is everyone here? Let’s get going then!”

Yuuto confirmed the presence of the group members before giving the signal to depart.

In response, the girls and the other boys except for me energetically answered, “Yeah!”

These guys are quite enthusiastic, I noted, walking slightly detached from the overall atmosphere. I found myself at the end of our group’s formation.

Shizuku and Kirasaka walked in front of me, followed by two other male students. Yuuto, flanked by Nakayama and Miyashita, led the way up front.

It wasn’t a formation dictated by anyone; it had naturally fallen into place. In other words, I was entrusted with being the rear guard. In case of any trouble, I could boldly tell my group members to go ahead.

Wait a minute… Am I just a sacrificial lamb?

My usual negative thinking flared up again, and I felt like I had grasped the true meaning of this lineup.

“Since it’s called ‘Kokusai Street’ I thought there would be lots of international products.”

“Yeah, I was expecting more international stuff, but it seems like there are mainly products from Okinawa. Although, the Okinawan T-shirts are three times as tacky as I imagined.”

Selling T-shirts is a common sight in famous tourist spots, but Okinawa’s T-shirts were especially notable for being extra tacky.

They often featured local specialties like sata andagi, shisa, and random, incomprehensible phrases. <Sweet deep fried buns>

I can understand the shisa, but the inclusion of food and seemingly arbitrary text? It’s confusing. Plus, none of these quotes seem to be from a famous figure.

In front of a street vendor, Shizuku and I examined the products, tilting our heads in confusion. Kirasaka let out a quiet chuckle.

“You’ve never been abroad, right? Did you expect to feel like you’re overseas here?”

“…”

Those few words were quite provocative, and both Shizuku and I immediately frowned.

Well, you’ve really struck a chord now, haven’t you?

You’ve further stoked the tiny flame of doubt that lies dormant in our hearts.

“…Just because you’ve been overseas doesn’t mean you should get carried away. I just love Japan, that’s all. I don’t want to go to places where I can’t communicate, in other words, I just don’t want to leave home!”

“Minato-kun, your true feelings are coming out”

Oh no, I almost allowed Kirasaka’s provocation to take over me and I almost let out my emotions.

The fact that it’s already out, let’s just ignore it.

We checked out a few shops, but they all seemed to have a similar selection. It’s best to abandon the idea of buying souvenirs from Kokusai Street.

During the daytime, I purchased Okinawa soba* and sata andagi sets at a local products exhibition to be sent by mail, so I should be fine with that.
<A type of noodles>

With that in mind, the plan was to simply stroll around Kokusai Street, but my gaze was still fixed on Miyashita and Nakayama, who were captivated by the merchandise at the street vendors.

“Are you going to create a situation for them to be alone here as well?”

“Well, when I say ‘do it,’ I can’t do much other than being a nuisance and get myself between them to create some time.”

We were already moving as a group. Until we enter a building or move to another tourist spot, I’ll have to get myself into the conversation as inconspicuously as possible, even if it seems unnatural.

As we walked, I pondered with a sense of randomness, making sure to keep some distance from the group ahead.

However, Shizuku, who was beside me, seemed to be thinking along the same lines.

With a serious look, she thought for a moment and then spoke up.

“Minato-kun, are you enjoying this school trip?”

Suddenly, I was thrown off by the question, which seemed to have no connection to our previous conversation.

“Why are you asking about that now?”

Kirasaka spoke as if to represent Shizuku’s words.

“Maybe there was something beneficial in helping that girl, but what we really want to see is Minato-kun enjoying himself.”

“Let’s not get too involved in helping,” those words, added at the end, made me sigh involuntarily.

I hadn’t really intended to be so deeply involved, but to them, it might appear as if I’ve been devoting my entire school trip to helping her.

I also need to consider their feelings. Especially when it’s someone I value more than Miyashita.

For now, Shizuku’s assistance will be put to use at the next destination. Right now, let’s explore the street vendors together as a trio.

Our group spent a long time leisurely strolling through the many shops on both sides of the sidewalk.

The baseball team guys ended up buying wooden swords that would undoubtedly never be used, and there was a photo sticker booth with Okinawa-exclusive designs set up on the street, where Yuuto, Nakayama, and Miyashita were taking pictures.

We even tried a place that sold ‘Dragon Ice’, an ice cream made from dragon fruit, which had an incredibly cool name, but by the time I finished washing my hands at a nearby water fountain, Shizuku and Kirasaka had eaten it all.

A little kid asked for directions, and when Kirasaka, who knew the area, answered, the boy was so frightened by her sharp and dignified gaze that he burst into tears. So Shizuku stepped in to give him directions.

There were plenty of amusing moments.

Even though our group didn’t stick together as one but instead split into three smaller groups within our class, I believe our time on Kokusai Street was still meaningful.

CH#256

#256

Right after Yuuto and Miyashita moved a bit away from the class group and started to wander around the park, something changed.

Up until this point, Nakayama had been relatively uninterested, but now her gaze started to scan her surroundings.

It was like a child looking for their mother, her eyes darting busily. It was easy to figure out what she was looking for.

“My bad… I’m gonna step away for a bit.”

“Sure, but don’t go too far, okay?”

“I’m not a child…”

I informed Nakayama with a single sentence while they were focused on the beautiful sea, and they sent me off with words like a mother would.

Kirasaka also sighed as if she couldn’t care less and clicked her tongue softly in Nakayama’s direction.

I distanced myself from the two of them and proceeded towards the central area of the park.

There was a stone monument in the shape of an arch inside the park. Yuuto and Miyashita were inspecting the area with great interest.

By positioning myself between them and Nakayama, who seemed to be approaching them, I unintentionally created an obstruction. I stopped walking when I did that.

As soon as I stopped, the path between both groups became blocked, and Nakayama, who had been walking forward while showing clear signs of irritation, stopped right in front of me.

“Where are you going…?”

“Why do I need to tell you?”

“Well, technically, I was assigned as the group leader by Yuuto during class assignment, so I would be the one to get scolded if the group members act on their own and go missing, right?”

Strictly speaking, the role of leading the group was mainly Yuuto’s, but this was one of those rare situations where the position was useful.

Even if I tried to make small talk with her, it’s obvious that I’ll be brushed aside by her.

So, I tried to put her in a situation where she had to answer something, she said with a very displeased look and voice.

“Aya does things on her own too, right? So, why don’t you stop her?”

“…”

Nakayama pointed to Miyashita, who was sitting shoulder to shoulder chatting to Yuuto happily.

However, contrary to her thoughts, after looking behind and obstructing her movements, I spoke briefly.

“I allowed it because they consulted me about wanting to take a look around the park for a bit, so I gave them the permission… I can contact them.”

You mustn’t forget that blatantly lying is not a good idea.

By carefully choosing your words and including a hint of truth, your words can gain credibility. Finally, by indirectly pointing out that you don’t have a means of communication, you make it clear that you’re not giving special treatment.

If other students can stay in contact, they are free to move within the park.

So, as long as Nakayama contacts with someone else, it’s fine to let her follow the two in front.

However, she likely hasn’t exchanged contact information with other students apart from Yuuto and Miyashita.

I had no basis for this, but I was confident.

Watching her behaviour, it’s quite self-centered.

Kirasaka is nicknamed the Ice Queen because of her cold behaviour and even colder eyes but Nakayama is probably someone who wants to become the real queen.

She dislikes being told what to do by others and prioritizes her own desires.

She is the queen to those around her.

She’s forgiven for being at the top of the school’s hierarchy, like a privileged class.

Even though there’s no need to obey Nakayama’s words, her position at the top within the school justifies it, so many female students put on a polite smile and follow her.

Well, I don’t care about the school’s ranking situation or anything like that. Honestly, I’m not concerned.

But for now, I’d like her to refrain from her selfish behaviour. Even in this unexpectedly short time, it’s a valuable opportunity for Miyashita to shine.

However, unlike what Miyashita and I feel, it seems Nakayama sees her as an obstacle. She brushed passed me and moved in their direction with sloppy steps.

“Do you not like it that much.”

“Huh?”

I turned around and asked Nakayama.

What is it the she hates so much.

Her expression was nothing short of displeasure, her eyes narrowing, her voice low, and her mood clearly sour.

If the reason was Miyashita who was standing next to Yuuto, why did she get so upset? I asked, and in response, Nakayama smirked as if she found it irritating.

“Do I need to answer that? You act so self-important… it’s annoying.”

“Yeah, I guess so… I didn’t expect you to answer, anyway.”

Was she looking forward to seeing me irritated or losing my temper by her remarks?

When I opened my eyes after a sign, Nakayama had a blank look on her face for a moment, but then her expression changed to one full of indignation.

I just wanted to hear what was going on in Nakayama’s mind when she tried to intervene between them. I knew it made her uncomfortable.

From an unrelated and not-so-familiar classmate like me, it would be even more irritating. But it seemed like she took this step because the girl standing next to Yuuto was Miyashita Aya.

For instance, if it were Shizuku or Kirasaka standing beside him, she wouldn’t go out of her way to intervene.

That’s because, even within the school’s caste system, she wasn’t any match for them.

Sure, Nakayama probably held a position of authority among the female students. She was the one who always clung to Yuuto, talking and laughing together.

It wasn’t based on academic ability; it was the result of the unconscious hierarchy formed by the behaviour of the girls in the class, which made the other girls not go up against her.

A hierarchy that was only valid in this context and place, and in which Nakayama, with her exaggerated appearance and outgoing personality, had emerged as the leader.

In reality, they should all stand in the same place.

Then what was their judgement based on? Probably about 80% appearance and 20% speech and behaviour.

Students in the school who were classified as delinquents based on their flashy looks, outgoing personalities, and other factors were usually higher up in the school caste.

There was no real substance, just a top-down hierarchy. But the students at the moment were afraid of being isolated, so they followed students with assertive opinions like hers.

Whether following was right or wrong didn’t matter. Rebellion meant isolation, and in the worst case, it could lead to bullying, which was the terrifying aspect of the school’s caste system.

However, there was no need to worry about Shizuku and Kirasaka. They met all the conditions that would likely make their words respected.

They excelled in essential aspects for students: appearance, academic performance, and athletic ability.

There was nothing in which Shizuku and Kirasaka were inferior to Nakayama. She couldn’t say anything because of that.

But Miyashita was different.

The person she regards as lower than herself is occupying the space next to the boy she liked.

…It’s strange. I thought I was analyzing Nakayama’s behaviour objectively, but I haven’t found something this ridiculous in a while.

What could she possibly think Miyashita was lacking compared to her?

It’s probably a personality issue. Miyashita didn’t seem to be the kind of person who wanted to be in the spotlight. In contrast, Nakayama was known for her dominant statements.

Miyashita probably had followed Nakayama so far because she was afraid of Nakayama finding her unpleasant due to their incompatible personalities and getting excluded from the group.

But at the moment, Miyashita was different. She appeared courageous as she acted on her feelings.

“Are we done now? We’re in a hurry.”

There was no need to linger, staring at the looks she received.

Flaunting her brightly dyed blonde hair, she passed me, sighing, and continued walking.

The time Shizuku and Kirasaka had given me was probably about five minutes. I hadn’t done much, but I’d managed to initiate some conversation.

I couldn’t create a perfect one-on-one situation; that wasn’t my style. So, I decided not to follow Nakayama and began walking back towards the area where students in the same uniform gathered.

…Should I just go back and tell them that I couldn’t stop her?

If it were the two of them, they’d probably laugh it off and say it was very Minato-like.

Because they’re kind, they’d probably say they’d arrange for more such situations.

“…But really, this is uncool.”

It was my decision to help them. Nakayama might have feelings for Yuuto too, but I didn’t want to make half-hearted promises.

I continued walking, passed Nakayama, and then stopped in front of her again.

“The disturber reappears…”

“What, seriously, you’re just annoying…”

Let’s change the plan. Let’s improvise from Plan A.

I wasn’t the kind of brainy strategist or tactician who thought things through extensively.

It wouldn’t matter how thoughtful or arrogant I was, I was just be a nuisance to Nakayama.

Okinawa Peace Memorial Park.

Officially known as the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Park, this park faces the bay and is famous for its natural scenery with the scent of the sea, the sound of waves, and the vast ocean that can be seen.

In Japanese history, this place has become one of the significant end points, and the memorial stones are inscribed with numerous names.

As time goes on, memories and experiences from the past are fading in today’s world, and these memorial stones play a crucial role in conveying the tragic and sad aspects of war to high school students in their adolescence.

Upon arriving at the park, the students disembarked from the bus and gathered by class.

Starting from Class 2-1, a female guide began explaining the history and the circumstances leading up to the construction.

“This memorial stone has the names of approximately 240,000 people inscribed…”

240,000, an incredible number.

If my memory serves me right, our town has just over 100,000 residents.

That’s more than double, the number of names on this stone.

Within the park’s grounds, curved memorial stones stand in rows, dozens, even hundreds of them. Even the sight of this alone is extraordinary, but when you consider the total number, words fail.

The students listened to the guide with various expressions, but few of them seemed genuinely engrossed.

They probably ignore it as simple story from the past.

For today’s youth, the word ‘war’ has become something they can’t even imagine as it feels too far removed from their reality.

Even I, who observes the students as if I understand, am no exception.

I’ve seen this topic in documentaries and read about it in books, but being here in person makes it all the more real.

This peace memorial park, filled with the names of so many, truly brought home the importance of students like us visiting this place.

We mustn’t take living in a peaceful world for granted, and even someone as sensitive as Shizuku can’t hide her sadness upon hearing the number mentioned by the guide.

Kirasaka, too, showed no signs of her usual sharpness in her eyes.

However, the female guide didn’t dwell on dark topics and emphasized the park’s natural beauty.

At the end of the park, a fence was set up, and beyond it was a breathtaking view of the sea.

“Amazing…”

“Our town is near the mountains, so I’ve never seen such a beautiful sea in my life!”

We walked up to the fence, and upon seeing the breathtaking view, Shizuku let out her amazement.

The sunlight from the clear sky reflected on the sea surface, creating a dazzling shimmer.

While I had always imagined the sea as a deep blue, the sea in Okinawa was closer to a light blue or even emerald green.

I squinted at the water’s surface and noticed the fish swimming beneath it.

“Is that fish delicious?”

“We didn’t come here to judge fish. Can’t you say something more romantic?”

“Your eyes are as beautiful than those fish over there… I mean, they might be, but I can’t see their eyes.”

“That’s the worst compliment.”

I complimented Kirasaka with a charming line, but she looked at me half-consciously and replied in a angered tone.

Beside me, Shizuku had turned her gaze away, her shoulders trembling slightly.

“Is something wrong?”

“No, I just thought your eyes are probably quite ‘beautiful’.”

“Indeed, those fish have more beautiful eyes than whatever murky stuff you’ve got.”

“Oh, really?”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

When Shizuku provocatively directed her words at Kirasaka, the latter retorted just as fiercely.

There was a brief pause, and then the two of them brought their faces incredibly close, almost touching foreheads, emitting an intense aura of displeasure as they glared at each other.

…This was certainly an unexpected turn of events.

What on earth is happening? What kind of battlefield have I stumbled into?

The other students from our class, sensing the dangerous atmosphere, quickly started moving away.

I tried to find Yuuto for assistance, but he had distanced himself a little and was gazing at me with compassion.

Has your danger detecting ability gotten better lately?

It’s really infuriating that his gaze seems to tell me ‘Do your best!’

Moreover, somewhat surprisingly, Miyashita had slyly positioned himself beside Yuuto.

She typically hovered around Yuuto but had now decided to sit there amidst the escalating tension. She must be more calculated than I thought.

“Are Kanazaki-san and Kirasaka-san always on bad terms?”

“Well, if you ask me, they usually do… but it gets exceptionally tense under certain conditions.”

“I see…”

A few meters away, Miyashita asked Yuuto.

Yuuto responded with a wry smile, and Miyashita nodded as if somewhat convinced.

Not that I wanted her to be convinced.

“At any rate, the mere fact that you met alone in the morning violates the rules for this school trip. Not to mention it’s different from the conversation I had with you earlier.”

“There’s no reason for you to be bound for an early morning walk, is there?”

“…?”

Returning my gaze from Yuuto and the others, I found that the conversation between Shizuku and Kirasaka had already shifted away from the fish swimming leisurely underwater.

When Shizuku inquired about the incident of us basking in the morning sunlight in the courtyard, Kirasaka, who seemed completely unconcerned, answered straightforwardly.

Why were the two of them fighting on this school trip, anyway?

Or rather, the root of their argument was the joke I made to Kirasaka.

Well, there was no other reason, so I’ll just stand by without interfering until they calm down.

“Since this might take a while, how about you two take a stroll in the park?”

I suggested to Yuuto and Miyashita. This had nothing to do with their feelings; it was just a waste of time for them to remain in this situation since they were in the same group.

Fully aware that my help wouldn’t be needed and might even make things worse, I made the proposal. Yuuto let out a small sigh and nodded.

“Yeah, let’s do that for a while.”

“Y-Yes!”

Fortunately, the other group led by Nakayama had been completely absorbed in taking photos of the current view, so they didn’t notice that Yuuto and Miyashita were about to leave.

The situation wasn’t to my liking, but it was working out well her.

Yuuto was behaving naturally, escorting her like a host leading his guests to the entrance.

I watched them leave with a smile, thinking he was quite skilled at handling girls. The situation was quite favorable for her.

“…”

“…”

When I turned my attention back to Shizuku and Kirasaka, who were now looking completely relaxed despite the recent tensions, instead they were looking at me calmly.

“What happened?”

“No, I should be asking, ‘What happened?’… Did you resolve everything?”

Shizuku’s inquiry was met with my own question, and Kirasaka casually responded.

“That was all just staged.”

“It’s better if we can leave them alone, right?”

It seemed that their argument had been part of their own calculations, and both their actions and my response had been within their expectations.

“Oh, I see… that’s how it is.”

It was as though they were telling me that their plan to isolate Yuuto and Miyashita on this trip was more straightforward and less risky than anything I could come up with..

Humans are fragile when they experience setbacks.

They tend to either reject themselves or reject others.

In this way, they can have time heal themselves and start walking again.

No one desires these feelings.

Being denied is painful and creates a sense of loneliness.

Uncomprehended sadness gradually erodes the heart, giving birth to negative emotions.

Jealousy and anger can turn emotions for someone, which initially began with goodwill, upside down. This is what makes humans frightening.

Now, under the darkening evening sky, I witnessed a girl who was about to confess her feelings for the first time.

I know it.

She was about to open her heart, knowing that she might be rejected and would have to experience setbacks and sadness.

Her trembling shoulders were visible even through her clothes. She must be nervous, maybe even struggling to breathe.

The girl beside me, with her striking beauty, adjusted her black hair and gazed at the girl in front with sharp eyes. She must be thinking something too.

Another girl, who was waiting at the accommodation, was going through the same situation right now. She was empathizing with the girl who was about to face circumstances similar to what she herself had gone through.

Right now, no one here was benefiting. They were all on the verge of abandoning the comfort they had been enjoying so far. It was a loss.

But as I watched their determined steps, a feeling of concern welled up inside me.

Okinawa’s second day began with an unexpected morning greeting from Kirasaka.

The hall was bustling with students seeking breakfast.

However, there was a noticeable difference in their appearance.

Many male students had not yet fully awakened and of whom who were awake most were casually dressed and not well-groomed.

On the other hand, many girls had already dressed in their uniforms, their hair neatly done.

This was a clear difference in awareness.

The boys who were already prepared, let’s say they have the most girl power.

Well, this was just something in my mind.

Despite being a place for breakfast, there was little conversation, and the hall was less lively than it had been during dinner.

Few people seemed to care much about where to sit, and Shizuku and Kirasaka casually joined a table, where there were hardly any cold stares.

The time was still early, only seven o’clock.

Both Kirasaka and I were fully awake, having enjoyed the morning sun. As we had finished breakfast, we were already observing the surroundings.

“…”

“…Those two, they’re sitting at the same table, for now.”

Kirasaka said, looking beyond my line of sight.

Shizuku puffs out her cheek like a squirrel and moves her gaze in the same direction as she munches and enjoys her breakfast.

Yuuto was sitting at a table where most of the main members of Class 2-3 were gathered.

Miyashita was also nearby, and it was clear that the two were at a certain distance from each other.

It’s because Yuuto won’t push someone away if he learns that they are interested in them.

That’s why Miyashita could hold her ground. However, their interaction seemed somewhat awkward, different from yesterday. I could tell that even from the sidelines.

“At this rate, they might catch on, especially Nakayama-san.”

Shizuku said, sipping her mixed juice.

Certainly, Nakayama was there, always hovering near Yuuto.

She seemed to be intimidating other female students and establishing her presence.

Yuuto didn’t seem to mind, but it gave off an air of territorial dispute among the girls.

…I really didn’t want to get involved with Nakayama. She probably didn’t like me either.

Okay, so what now?

It would be easy to isolate them since we were in the same group. However, that would raise suspicions among the others.

Creating a situation where they could talk to each other alone, perhaps even indirectly… that was what I wanted to achieve, a situation within our group activities where they can have a conversation alone.

Nakayama has a high self-esteem and seems to hate orders from others, so if I might need to stir up some strong disagreement to make Nakayama go for my preferred course.

Afterwards, maybe I’ll let the two of them have a conversation…

With that broader plan in mind, I quietly divert my gaze from the two.

We’ve finished our meals, and there’s nothing to do here.

I could use this place like a high-end drink bar with all-you-can-drink drinks, but it has the disadvantages of being noisy.

Still, I decide to take a few drinks so that I could enjoy some fruit juices that I wouldn’t normally drink.

I know, I should drink black coffee for the pretense factor, but…

Kirasaka is calmly and elegantly drinking black coffee in front of me, so I can’t help looking like child in front of her which I don’t really mind.

In front of the bustling hall filled with students from Sakura Hill Academy, a large screen hangs down.

Instead of showing the expected video, the screen displays today’s schedule for our school.

In the morning, there will be activities for the whole group, followed by a visit to a local market before noon to buy souvenirs for our families. After that, we’ll be divided into groups for the rest of the day to explore an unknown area and enjoy Okinawan cuisine.

I hope we won’t have to walk too much.

Student trips can go either way, some schools require students to bring their own casual clothes, but our school insists on us wearing our uniforms.

This might have its pros and cons, but I’m in favour because I don’t have to prepare three days’ worth of outfits.

On the contrary, Shizuku is from the faction that wishes they could wear their own clothes, and Kirasaka doesn’t seem to care. On the second day, today, as well, we wore the same old uniforms without any change.

The students from our school, dressed in uniform, gather at the entrance as they did the previous day and board their designated buses one by one.

Inside the bus, it’s the same seating arrangement as yesterday, and there are no students beside me. Yuuto has moved to the back, where Nakayama and Miyashita are sitting.

“…It’s kind of irritating.”

I glanced at Yuuto, who had flowers in both the hands and muttered, when I heard a small cough from the seat in front of me.

“Minato-kun?”

“Be careful with your words, or your tongue will get burnt.”

Amidst the engine noise of the bus, the voice from the front sounds as if it’s growling.

…It’s genuinely scary.

Even though I thought I muttered at a volume that no one around me could hear, it was terrifying that they responded without missing a single word.

Let’s keep quiet about our thoughts. Speaking carelessly might put Minato’s life in danger.

As the hotel staff bid farewell to the students who are enjoying their youth with a sales smile, Sakura Hill Academy sets off towards the Peace Memorial Park.

The weather on the second day of the school trip was sunny, but my mood felt cloudy.

Sharing a futon in a Japanese-style room with three other guys was surprisingly uncomfortable…

The thunderous snores of the two baseball team members were terrifying as they echoed through the room late at night.

I wondered if I had ever slept so lightly even during the school trips in middle school, and I tried to shake off my drowsiness in the bathroom.

Water droplets from my bangs fell, and in the mirror, I saw the reflection of a young man with somewhat cloudy eyes.

No matter how many years passed, I couldn’t perceive any change in my own face, which was a bit strange.

After leaving the bathroom and confirming that none of the members in the same room were awake, I left the room for some morning air to pass the time until breakfast.

It felt too cramped to quietly pass the time until breakfast, and unlike the previous night, the only sounds in the hallway were the soft background music and the quiet footsteps of the employees.

With a small nod and a polite smile, I acknowledged the employees as I used the elevator to descend to the first floor.

Even if the students were still asleep, the work of the employees had already begun.

Preparing breakfast, getting ready for new guests, arranging for departures… I wondered what motivated them to do and choose this type of job, as I opened a small door on the east wall of the hotel.

Inside was a small open space with grass, almost like a rest area where you couldn’t see the view between the buildings.

I imagined that it was set up for employees to take a breath of fresh air during their breaks, sitting on the benches intentionally placed there, basking in the morning sun.

“…It’s a bit warm.”

Even though it was already November, the sunlight was slightly warmer here than in Kanto. But it was just right for a body that hadn’t fully awakened in the morning.

After enjoying the morning sun for a while, I noticed someone else entering this small space from the direction I had come.

Kirasaka, her short black hair neatly arranged, walked while brushing her hand through her hair and then took a seat beside me with a faint smile when she spotted me.

“I thought you were someone who takes it easy in the mornings.”

“Well, it turns out, those cheap beds at home are more comfortable after all…”

Perhaps, no matter how high-quality the bedding material was, it just didn’t agree with my body.

Kirasaka, without commenting on my answer, seemed satisfied with it and took a seat beside me.

A faint but distinct fragrance, not at all like the bedding she had slept in, tickled my nostrils, and she looked at me with a curious gaze.

“Can I ask about what happened yesterday?”

“…”

Kirasaka asked in a concise manner.

There wasn’t really any grand reason behind what she was thinking.

Nevertheless, I had prepared words that I believed would satisfy her.

“I had no choice but to act when I found myself holding a good hand* unexpectedly in a situation where no one benefited from it… That’s all.” <Poker terminology: Possessing cards(hands) with chance of winning>

“Is that about you, Makoto-kun, or someone else?”

“Both.”

Her voice sounded gentle, like a mother asking her child, a kindness that was unimaginable in Kirasaka’s usual demeanor.

On the contrary, she’s being so kind that it’s scary.

However, whether it was due to the pleasant morning sun or for some other reason, words flowed naturally from my mouth without overthinking.

“Me and those guys, at one point or another, had all found our answers. But from those answers, some of us moved forward, while others stagnated.”

“But the actions they sought weren’t their true desires, were they?”

“… Probably not. But in that situation, I didn’t think anything would change unless someone in that place took action.”

The image of a park with aging playground equipment, where boys and girls dressed in the same uniforms created a scene reminiscent of a shounen manga, was still etched in my mind.

As I spoke somewhat self-deprecatingly, Kirasaka quietly lowered her gaze and fell silent.

However, it seemed that my lack of change in attitude towards taking action had been communicated to her.

There was no trace of joking in her eyes.

It might have appeared as if I were using a fellow student, Miyashita Aya, for my own purposes, and she is probably similar.

Mutual interests rather than values led us down this path.

What Kirasaka had been concerned about was whether there were any special feelings or relationships between Miyashita and me.

As long as there were no unnecessary intrusions into the affairs of the people you were observing and interested in, there wouldn’t be any issues.

“Are you satisfied?”

“Yes, I understand that there’s no avoiding this, no matter what you say.”

I couldn’t help but smile bitterly at the complaint mixed in with a sigh.

As long as we were in the same group, it was inevitable that I would cause some trouble for both Kirasaka and Shizuku.

However, I had a feeling that they would provide me with some assistance to some extent, even if it was somewhat self-serving.

She lets out a sigh as if she could see through my ulterior motives.

“I wonder if there’s something you can gain from witnessing the conclusion of this romantic journey.”

Kirasaka muttered in a soft voice, as if she were speaking for the doubts that everyone might have.

In terms of visible gains and losses, there was probably no benefit for me in expending unnecessary consideration and effort.

But precisely because I had lived in a small world, opportunities to closely witness someone’s romantic journey were rare.

Regardless of the outcome, by watching and listening in on this precious moment, I felt like I might grasp something that had previously eluded me… or at least, I had a feeling.

…Well, it’s just a feeling.

If this ends up being a waste of time, so be it.

It might serve as a catalyst for a change in the relationships with those around me, including me.

So, I’ll cooperate to the extent I can and maybe even offer some support.

What I truly believed was that Shinra Minato was a person who was rotten to the core, through and through.

<BBX> : Couldn’t update yesterday, had a couple of exams today. Sorry for that. Chapter was also a bit small. Can’t do anything about that can I?🤷‍♂️

CH#252

#252

First night of the school trip.

After finishing the dinner, the students were enjoying their last free time of the day.

Some students gathered in the lounge for conversations, while others rested in their rooms.

I received an invitation from Shizuku to participate in Shisa-making in the small hall on the first floor.

There were about thirty students participating in total.

Students from one class were reminiscing about their childhood as they molded clay with their hands.

When I reflexively sat down near the end of the room, Shizuku and Kirasaka sat down on either side of me.

Yuuto took a seat opposite me, and next to him was a student who hadn’t been part of the original plan.

“I didn’t know you were participating in the Shisa-making, Miyashita-san.”

“Well, it’s a free experience, and it’s a nice way to make memories.”

Yuuto said to Miyashita who was sitting next to him.

After finishing the discussion with Miyashita and returning to the room, I told him that she wanted to participate in the hands-on workshop, so I agreed.

Yuuto probably understood that it wasn’t the essence of our conversation, but I also knew he wouldn’t pry further, which is why I phrased it like that.

The workshop began, and the instructor gave a verbose lecture on how to make Shisa.

After quietly listening and learning the basics, we were given free time to create.

Initially, I thought we would work silently in the room, but surprisingly, the room was filled with energy, and it seemed that talking wouldn’t attract much attention.

However, the Shisa-making had just begun.

It wasn’t the right time to bring up strange topics out of the blue, so all five of us focused on our clay creations.

…Shisa, huh.

As sample materials, various Shisa pictures were placed on each table, all of them having common elements but different forms.

Cloud-like or lion-like manes, sharp fangs, but the eyes ranged from cute to majestic like those of an ancient bronze statue.

In essence, it seemed that we were free to create based on our own personalities.

About thirty minutes had passed since it began.

As I began shaping what I imagined as a four-legged creature, I felt gazes from both sides.

Shizuku’s work was like a large version of the sample at the top of the reference materials. The pose resembled a sitting dog, and the positioning of the eyes and angles seemed calculated for a clean overall appearance.

On the other hand, Kirasaka’s creation bore no resemblance to the reference materials. However, it exuded a sense of dynamism, with its front legs raised as if it were racing through the earth and fierce, intense eyes that would leave no room for the instructor to criticize.

The way these two approached the task reflected their personalities: perfect imitation and perfect individuality.

Being sandwiched between them felt like some kind of torture.

It was awkward, and at the same time, I felt embarrassed by the lack of precision in my Shisa.

…I need to clear my mind.

Once they were satisfied with their creations, both of them stopped and observed my work in progress.

“Is that a Shiba Inu?”

“In terms of size …a puppy? Or is it a miniature Shiba?”

“…It’s a Shisa. It’s not finished yet, so could you two wait a bit?”

Our working speeds were different, so it was natural that they would be idle for a while, but I hoped they wouldn’t start an impromptu evaluation.

Or rather, it’s not a Shiba Inu.

Desperately focusing on creating the mane, I hoped they would eagerly await its completion.

As expected, since I’m a guy, I’m more excited about docking parts than making it at once.

Well, to be honest, it’s easier to create individual parts than an integrated one.

Coupled with the liveliness in the room, it wasn’t a bad timing for a conversation.

Without pausing my hands, I redirected my gaze forward with an upward glance.

Yuuto had made significant progress on his Shisa, resembling a lion, with only minor discrepancies.

Miyashita, on the other hand, was working on fine details, and the concentration of everyone at the table had somewhat relaxed.

“Yuuto.”

“Yeah?”

While continuing to knead the clay without halting my hands, I engaged my thoughts to their fullest extent.

Miyashita’s shoulders beside Yuuto shook. It was likely due to the proposal I had shared with her before we gathered in this small hall.

“If you genuinely want Yuuto to take you seriously, you should tell him how you feel first.”

For Miyashita, this might seem like an untimely and unwelcome suggestion.

It might be hard for her to understand why she should disclose her affection openly before capturing Yuuto’s attention.

However, in some cases, this approach could be more effective.

Given Yuuto’s overly kind nature, he was susceptible to taking others’ words at face value. If she conveyed her interest clearly from the start, it would be less likely for him to treat her as just another friend, like those around him.

When I presented this idea, Miyashita reluctantly agreed, understanding that she had her own tendencies of being overly kind.

“It seems like you’ve caught her interest, Yuuto.”

“Yeah?”

As I completed the final section of the Shisa’s mane, I attached it around the neck.

Finally, I had a Shisa that somewhat resembled the real thing, evoking a slight sense of accomplishment.

As expected of Minato-kun, it was neither impressive nor unimpressive – just an ordinary, somewhat bland Shisa-like creature.

“What’s this all of a sudden, Minato… And Miyashita-san too—”

“…I appreciate your concern, but it’s a bit overwhelming. Also, you should pay more attention to your surroundings.”

For someone like me, it was an uncharacteristic remark.

As evidence, Shizuku narrowed her eyes, as if suspecting that something was going on.

As for Kirasaka, she either had no interest or was simply ignoring us. Instead, she placed my Shisa-kun Mark-1 and her own creation side by side, taking photos of them with her smartphone.

Taking a moment to breathe, I turned my gaze back to Yuuto and Miyashita, who were seated next to each other.

They exchanged glances, with Yuuto looking slightly awkward and Miyashita blushing.

“What’s going on between the two of them?”

“…Nothing, really.”

I responded in a hushed tone to Shizuku, who had discreetly leaned in to speak beside me.

She was curious because she knew that I had never facilitated any assistance from female students for Yuuto before. Her voice carried a hint of suspicion.

“I don’t know if she’s serious or joking. You’ll have to figure it out.”

I said seriously to Yuuto, bypassing any attempts at humor.

Reading people’s minds completely was impossible, as long as you were human. If only there were some magic like those in a fantasy world…

This might not have been the assistance she had in mind when she approached me, but you’ll have to give me a break.

If you have any regrets, you should convince yourself that you consulted the wrong person.

This was the only way I knew how to handle it.

I wasn’t fond of straightforward methods though…

“Well then… I’m tired. I’m going to bed.”

I said, picking up the plate with Shisa-kun Mark-1 and placing it on the shelf.

It is scheduled to be sent to my home once it dries and can be mailed.

Let’s have him become the guardian of our home.

After all, I worked at a black company that operated seven days a week.

With that thought in my heart, I turned around and spoke just one last thing to the two who would likely be the turning point of this school trip.

“Good night, you two.”

“You couldn’t think of anything else to say, huh?”

“Noisy.”

When I thought about it carefully, I didn’t have anything to say to them at all.

Unexpectedly, the consequences of not enjoying a typical high school student’s life were catching up to me.

For now, I should return to the hotel room before Yuuto starts lecturing me.

His lectures tend to be quite lengthy.

Back when I had just entered middle and high school, I had been asked for similar favors.
Sometimes, I was approached as a mediator, while at other times, they wanted to know about us so that they could appeal to them in advance.

The requests this time, however, were far more complicated than I had expected.
Simply asking someone to help with their confession could be quite a challenging endeavor.

For someone to attract someone who can’t even promote themselves, you need more than just a request.

If you genuinely want to be seen favorably by someone you’re interested in and be involved with them, you have to take action yourself.
But she still asked.

Confessions are significant life events, and to increase the chances of success, you need to narrow down your options and simplify your methods. But it made me wonder whether I should have even listened to her.

I couldn’t help but think that maybe I was repeating the same pattern with other students as I did with Miyashita Aya.

“Why are you asking me…?”

In situations like this, I often throw this question out there.

After all, it’s crucial to understand why they’re making this request, especially when they don’t stand a chance.

The response varied time to time, but the answer which I received this time was completely unexpected.

“Because I thought you were the only friend of Ogiwara-kun.”

“…”

I couldn’t help but wonder what she was talking about.

Yuuto’s friend list was already well beyond its limits, and it was common knowledge.

My gaze seemed to be filled with suspicion.

Then she explained further to supplement her words further.

“No, not in a bad way. I just thought you two were really close.”

“No, no, no…”

When I thought of people looking at me like this it felt uncomfortable, it made me feel sick, like a pair of people who are close.

When I shook my head and denied it, she burst out laughing, and for a moment, the atmosphere lightened.

However, it quickly became tense again.

This was no laughing matter.

“Even if I help, it won’t necessarily increase your chances.”

“I know, but I just want to create a situation where we can talk alone.”

If that was the case, then there was no need for me to get involved. I was about to retract my offer before even voicing it.

The image that came to mind was Nakayama’s figure at Shuri Castle, where she had ignored Miyashita’s suggestion.

Even if she came up with some reason to create a situation for them to be alone together, she probably wouldn’t agree.

However, I have to confirm the reason for not relying on the female students.

“Is there an option of relying on Nakayama by any chance?”

“That’s not possible, If it goes to that I might not even be able to join the group.”

The weight of those words revealed that the complexity of the female students’ friendships was even greater than I had imagined.

Perhaps they all shared this desire because they all idolized the prince-like figure?

There is no reason nor any obligation to help.

Seeing how modestly and cautiously Miyashita approached me for this request, it seemed clear that she expected the possibility of rejection when making this request.

Although I didn’t have any intentions of getting involved with human relationships in this school trip but…

There’s one thing that stuck me when I thought about it.

I realized something amidst all this.
Maybe this was a chance to straighten things out between Shizuku and Yuuto.

Whether the reasons were sound or not, this problem concerned me as well.

Shizuku and Yuuto were still dancing around each other in a vague relationship.

Perhaps it was time for an outside intervention.
However, during the school trip, we were bound by group activities. Even with my influence, managing eight people for a single purpose was a bit overwhelming.

“I’m not enough by myself. If we can get someone who understands the situation a little better, we might be able to find a way to make time for a conversation during our group activities…”

When I made this suggestion, Miyashita became silent with a thoughtful look on her face.

Since I only have limited connections, there’s only a few people I can rely on.

I suggested, and after considering it for a moment, she agreed.

“You can talk to Kirasaka-san if you want. But what worries me are Kanazaki-san and Ogiwara-kun…”

“You don’t need to worry about them. I don’t think there’s anything to worry about… Besides, if you don’t have solid evidence, you shouldn’t have come to me in the first place.”

When Miyashita said that, the corners of her mouth turned up slightly, and she smiled.

At that moment, I realized that I had let slip more than I intended.

Even the real reason for this conversation seemed like a reason to confirm whether the rumours of Shizuku and Yuuto dating were true or not to someone who knew about it.

It seems like she’s a more cunning than I thought.

But maybe you have to be a little sly to date Yuuto.

He’s such a good-natured wandering prince.

Creating a reason to get involved has been accomplished.

Now, the question is whether I really need to get involved.
Once again, I laughed at myself for creating reasons first and then facing my own feelings.

Miyashita looked at me strangely. After saying ‘it’s nothing’ I resumed my thoughts.

Helping someone with their love life might help me understand something I haven’t understood about myself.

So, even if it goes against my nature, taking action might not be a mistake.

“Alright, I understand. I’ll help.”

“That’s great… Thank you.”

Perhaps relieved, Miyashita let out a sigh and relaxed her tense body.
Having a conversation with someone she had hardly talked to, discussing her crush, and asking for advice must have been quite nerve-wracking.

Although I felt sorry for her in this situation, I blurted out one more thing.

“Now, there’s one proposal I have right away.”

“Eh, already?”

Amidst her confusion and panic, we began discussing the first move.

After Kirasaka’s father, Kirasaka Reiya, left the hotel.

With a somewhat awkward atmosphere between Yuuto and me, we didn’t feel like chatting, so we both sat on a bench together. Downstairs, Sakura Academy students began to gather and liven up.

Checking the time, it was already fifteen minutes before dinner. Yuuto and I followed the students heading towards the venue, walking side by side.

Students were gradually gathering in the hall on the first floor. Since it was open seating, many students were sitting in groups, forming clusters.

Conversely, the available seats were mostly small tables for four and large tables where only two people sat, so I couldn’t find a good spot.

Don’t they have individual seating?

I stood near the entrance of the hall, scanning the room, when a student who had come from the back of the entrance pulled my arm.

“Let’s sit there!”

“…Ok.”

The two students who entered alongside from the entrance were Shizuku and Kirasaka.

Shizuku pulled my arm, and Kirasaka silently followed behind.

Without saying anything, Yuuto also joined us naturally, so it seemed like we were all planning to sit together.

Kirasaka noticed and turned around to ask.

“Why don’t you sit on the floor?”

“I guess I’m a dog… Can’t I sit with you?”

He replied with a wry smile, brushing off Kirasaka’s words as if it was nothing.

Kirasaka’s face briefly showed a look of extreme displeasure, but when he looked back at me and sighed, he didn’t say anything to retort and continued walking.

Taking that as a sign of approval, Yuuto cheerfully followed behind us.

…Did they just form some sort of master-slave relationship?

I couldn’t help but think while being led by Shizuku.

Taking a vacant four-person table, Yuuto sat beside me. Shizuku and Kirasaka took seats across from us.

“Kanazaki-san, how about sitting with us?”

“Ogiwara-kun, you should come too.”

Two students, who had earlier occupied the large table before anyone could, called out to the two.

Blonde, red, green, and yellow hair, what flower garden is this?

Even though there were no restrictions on hair colour, the second-year students seemed to be getting a bit too carried away.

Two seats left unoccupied on the large table.

They sat beside each other, with girls on the left and boys on the right.

Naturally, they assumed they would join them. There was even a sneer on their face.

You should come over to my place instead, as if to imply that.

In response to the reaction that seemed to mock their sitting in the corner of the room, the two of them shook their heads.

“No need to force yourselves to eat with everyone.”

“Sorry, we had promised to come here earlier!”

They were smiling but their words contradicted that.

When Shizuku showed a rare expression of harsh rejection, Yuuto chose his words to settle the matter peacefully

It’s not clear who is right or wrong, but the student who invited them looked at us with dissatisfaction.

No, to be exact he was looking at me rather than us.

Not Kirasaka, not Yuuto.

The reason was simple. To them, I was the obstacle disrupting their enjoyable school trip dinner party.

If I were a kind high school boy, I would probably tell them to go ahead and enjoy without worrying about me.

Unfortunately, I don’t remember growing up as a smart boy.

As they confirmed that the two of them had taken seats, ignoring the glances directed their way, they shifted their gazes away.

After ensuring that all the students had taken their seats, the grade-level coordinator gave a brief closing statement for the first day, and then Okinawan dishes were served.

They had Okinawa soba, taco rice, and unlimited mango juice and the four of us shared our preferences of food over the time we ate dinner.

The most perplexing dish was the meat dish, with pork steak topped with a kind of purple sweet potato mousse.

Even someone like Shinra Minato, who was said to be a top contender in the Kanagawa Prefecture Sweet Tooth Championship, couldn’t comprehend the taste of this dish.

Why would they mix salty and sweet like this? That was probably what everyone was wondering when they took their first bite.

The person who came up with this had to have an extraordinarily creative mind. However, all the dishes were slightly different from what they were used to, making it an interesting dinner thanks to the local flavours.

After satisfying our hunger, all that was left was to use the bath and go to sleep.

As we left the hotel hall and walked down the hallway, Shizuku spoke.

“If you have some free time, would you like to join in on making Shisa?”

“What? We make it here?”

“Yes! It seems like interested students can experience it in the small hall from 7 o’clock.”

Shizuku said this with excitement, and it made me consider it. After all, I didn’t have any plans for after this.

I had thought about going back to the room, reading a novel, and then going to sleep. So, it might be a good way to pass the time.

I looked at Yuuto and Kirasaka and they both nodded, indicating their willingness to participate.

“Well then, let’s meet at 7 o’clock…”

“Understood! Let’s go, Kirasaka-san.”

“Yeah, yeah, you’re such an impatient person.”

Shizuku fluttered away, returning quickly to the third floor where the girls’ rooms were located. After that, Kirasaka let out a sigh and followed her with a look of exasperation.

“Can I have a moment?”

“…?”

As we resumed walking towards the first floor after deciding to go back to our room once and shower, we were suddenly stopped by a voice from behind.

The voice belonged to a female student, and at first, I didn’t turn around, thinking that it was Yuuto she wanted to talk to.

However, when I realized that Yuuto hadn’t started the conversation, I turned around and saw Miyashita, the girl I had taken photos for during the day.

“Do you need something?”

When I asked her, she directed her gaze towards Yuuto, who was standing beside me.

It was a somewhat embarrassed, yet meaningful gaze.

“Oh, I’ll go on ahead first, so you two please go ahead.”

“Sorry, Ogiwara-kun.”

“Don’t worry about it.”

The gaze she had directed at him was clearly meant to convey that she wanted to talk in private.

Rather, I had hoped that he would stay with us.

I mean, how many years had we known each other?

When I looked at him, his gaze seemed as if he knew that much and had warm eyes that were telling me to do my best.

No, seriously, does this guy have anything other than pink* in his brain? <Romance / Youthful stuff>

Until Yuuto disappeared from view, the two of us stood there in silence. Miyashita kept a lookout around us.

It seemed that she didn’t want to be seen in this situation.

She pointed towards a secluded passage behind the shop, as if guiding me.

We moved to a different location, where I leaned against the wall. I wondered what she wanted and waited.

Then, in a soft voice, Miyashita began to speak.

“Today… thank you.”

“Is this about the photos? You don’t need to thank me for that.”

In fact, if I had left her alone in that complicated situation, it would have left a bad aftertaste.

After all, we were in the same group.

While it might not bother Shizuku or Kirasaka, I couldn’t imagine creating a situation where I was alone with a girl I didn’t know well, which was probably why my voice was lower and my gaze was directed downwards.

My lack of communication skills was exposed in situations like this.

But I didn’t think there was any need to be nervous about a matter like this.

However, as we were alone in this situation that I couldn’t have imagined, I couldn’t refuse the determined gaze she directed at me.

“I have a request for you, Shinra-kun…!”

“…”

With those words, Miyashita took a deep breath. In an instant, a certain scene flashed through my mind.

This, again?

It was a memory that had remained vivid despite the passage of time and changing circumstances.

I couldn’t help but feel that time was moving as if to remind me.

I knew what she was going to ask for.

I also knew what she was seeking.

But, faced with those determined eyes, I couldn’t bring myself to stop her.

“I… like Ogiwara-kun… so, I want your help!”

In the midst of the bustling atmosphere within the building, her words echoed in my ears.

At the same time, it felt like the gears that had come to a halt between Yuuto and me were starting to turn again.
